Description

Intended for presenters and technical directors of performance venues, this training is designed to equip professionals with the tools to read, analyze, and anticipate the specific needs related to hosting circus performances.

Led by Hugo Hamel, a technical director with over 17 years of experience in circus creation and touring, this training dives deep into the often complex or misunderstood elements of a technical rider.

Training Objectives:

  • Understand the technical specifics unique to circus (rigging points, safety, performance area, artist prep time, etc.)
  • Identify unclear or critical areas in a technical rider
  • Ask the right questions to companies
  • Promote smooth and safe collaboration between the venue and the touring artists/technical team

Through concrete examples, practical advice, and real-life case studies, this training helps assess the feasibility of hosting a circus show, prepare teams and budget evaluations in advance, and turn the reading of a technical rider into a collaborative tool—rather than a source of stress.

Instructor

Hugo Hamel

With over 25 years of experience as a technical and production director, I specialize in designing, planning, and executing complex stage projects, primarily in the field of circus and live performance. My career has led me to collaborate with major international companies such as Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Éloize, Cirque Alfonse, and ComediHa!, overseeing the technical direction and production of original creations, international tours, and permanent installations.

I’ve also been involved in large-scale institutional projects, including the 375th anniversary celebrations of Montreal (835 performances hosted in one month), and spent over 10 years as Technical Director and Head Rigger at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, managing hundreds of productions each year.

With a degree in theatrical production and ETCP certification in rigging, I bring my expertise to ambitious creative projects, balancing artistic demands, technical feasibility, and efficient resource management.

Since 2021, I’ve been living aboard my sailboat—a longtime passion—combining mobility with professional engagement at a distance, in a lifestyle that supports both focus and balance.
