Aimed at presenters and technical directors of performance venues, this training aims to equip professionals to read, analyze, and anticipate the specific needs related to hosting circus shows.
Led by Hugo Hamel, a technical director specializing in circus creation and touring for over 17 years, this training thoroughly addresses the sometimes complex or often misunderstood elements of a technical rider.
Training Objectives:
Understand the technical specificities of circus (rigging, safety, performance area, artist preparation time, etc.)
Identify unclear or critical areas in a technical rider
Ask companies the right questions
Foster smooth and safe collaboration between the host venue and the touring artists/technical team
Through concrete examples, practical advice, and real-life cases, this training allows for a better assessment of hosting feasibility, preparing teams and budget evaluations upstream, as well as transforming the reading of a technical rider into a dialogue tool… rather than a source of stress.

“As a technical and production director for over 25 years, I have dedicated myself to the design, planning, and implementation of complex stage projects, primarily in the field of circus and live arts. My career has led me to collaborate with several international companies such as Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Éloize, Cirque Alfonse, and ComediHa!, providing technical direction and production for original creations, international tours, and permanent installations.
I have also participated in large-scale institutional projects, including the celebrations for Montreal’s 375th anniversary (835 performances hosted in one month), and I worked for over 10 years at the Palais des congrès de Montréal as a technical director and head rigger, successfully managing several hundred productions annually.
A graduate in theatrical production and ETCP certified in rigging, I apply my expertise to ambitious creations, balancing artistic demands, technical feasibility, and efficient resource management.
Since 2021, I have been living aboard my sailboat, a long-standing passion, thus combining mobility with remote professional engagement, in a lifestyle that promotes both concentration and balance.” – Hugo Hamel
