In Ethiopia, Circus is Seeking a Second Wind

“Circus arts were introduced late in Ethiopia, in the last decade of the 20th century. This began in 1991 in Addis Ababa. A small troupe of children with their teachers began performing before a sparse audience in the city squares.

Gradually, the audience grew, while simultaneously the small troupe developed its acts and virtuosity, eventually taking the name Circus Ethiopia. At the same time, other troupes appeared in different cities across the country: Jimma, Mekele, Nazareth. In 1993, they regrouped under the banner of Circus in Ethiopia, a non-profit organization.”
