On this International Circus Day, we invite you to reflect on this art and its magic that transcend borders and cultures.
Circus, much more than simple entertainment, is a true metaphor for life itself. Circus reminds us of the beauty of the unexpected and the importance of boldness. Every artist who spins, juggles, and defies gravity embodies not only talent, but also the courage to push human limits. They show us that beauty lies in risk and that every fall is an opportunity to get back up and fly higher.
Celebrating this art does not mean forgetting the challenges it faces. The circus sector has been going through a period of uncertainty in recent years. The efforts to recognize its importance in the Quebec and Canadian cultural landscape are the result of constant collective work. As economic pressures multiply, it is essential to continue moving forward and coming together. This resilience and this flame that drive artists and stakeholders in the field deserve to be highlighted today.
On this special day, everyone is therefore invited to reflect on their own experience with circus. It is time to share one’s thoughts, emotions, and memories.
And to conclude on a bright and hopeful note, let us proudly highlight that Geneviève Dupéré was awarded the Jury Prize at the luncheon of the 39th edition of the Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal, in the presence of 850 guests, on April 17th. Her acrobatic documentary show, Éch2osystème: From the River to the Stage, highlights the crucial role of circus artists in telling the story of the impacts of climate change in a different way. This award, accompanied by a $10,000 grant offered by Desjardins Caisse de la Culture, recognizes the artistic, poetic, and social commitment of an entire community.
This recognition reminds us how much circus is a powerful vehicle for meaning and transformation. Together, we form a living, supportive, and committed ecosystem, where everyone brings their light, color, and voice.
Thank you to the artists and to all those who keep circus alive. You are essential.
