Sharing of mental health specialists
The survey on the impacts of COVID-19 conducted last December found that 65% of respondents suffer from depression or anxiety. Given this high percentage of distress in our community, we are making it a priority for action.
To discuss immediate and longer-term mental health needs with the community, we held two conversations on January 27th on the subject. We were accompanied by the psychologist Myriam Pâquet, who helped us synthesize everything we heard during these two hours.
Several issues emerged, including: the loss of meaning and identity in the context of a professional standstill, performance anxiety due to high expectations, the complex body-mind relationship, the lack of anchoring when touring, the fear of failure and other phobias, the feeling of powerlessness when faced with distressed peers or subordinates. It is obvious that mental health disorders are present in our community and we will be working to provide tools to support you through our various programs in the months and years to come.
As a first step, we have gathered official mental health resources on our website. You can consult them at any time. On this page, you will also find a collaborative document for sharing mental health resources by province. One of the issues repeatedly mentioned during the consultations is the lack of access to mental health specialists who are familiar with the specific issues the circus arts sector are dealing with. This bilingual document is intended to be a source of such information. Anyone can either add the specialists they wish to recommend to the community or consult the resources that are shared in complete confidentiality. It is important to note, however, that the specialists listed here are not official references approved by En Piste.
Finally, we remind you that individual members have access to insurances that include eight hours of immediate and confidential support. If you would like to know more about this program, you can visit our website or contact Paola Dugit-Gros.
