(In French Only) Study on Live Arts in Québec
The Working Group on Performing Arts Attendance (GTFAS) is pleased to announce the release of a second edition of the Study on Performing Arts Audiences in Quebec (In French Only).
This research provides an updated portrait of the national, disciplinary, and geographical profiles of performing arts audiences and non-attendees in 2023. It presents and analyzes the factors influencing attendance, as well as a forward-looking overview.
This second publication follows an initial study conducted in 2018, which it builds on by using the same analytical framework and drawing from an equally rich set of data compiled through a national survey of over 6,000 respondents. In addition to the quantitative aspect, sections have been added to shed light on previously unclear areas related to time management in the process of attending performing arts events, young people’s relationship with cultural outings, and the anticipated impacts of COVID-19 and the economic situation on performing arts consumption.

This second publication follows an initial study conducted in 2018, adopting the same analytical framework and drawing on an equally rich dataset, compiled through a national survey of over 6,000 respondents. In addition to the quantitative aspect, sections have been added to shed light on previously unclear areas related to time management in the process of attending performing arts events, young people's relationship with cultural outings, and the expected impacts of COVID-19 and the economic situation on performing arts consumption.
While the first edition provided a detailed snapshot of performing arts attendance in Quebec in 2018, the second edition offers an equally broad picture, along with dynamic results from comparisons between 2018 and 2023.
Conducted by DAIGLE / SAIRE, the study reflects the various territorial realities across Quebec (urban centres, peripheries, remote regions, etc.) and takes into account numerous factors, including the different forms of professional dissemination (free, paid, festival-based, alternative venues, etc.).
This was made possible thanks to the financial support of the following five partners:
- Canada Council for the Arts (CCA)
- Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications (MCCQ)
- Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ)
- Canadian Heritage
- Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC)
