Tribute to André Simard

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of André Simard — artist, creator, and visionary educator, whose lasting influence continues to resonate throughout the contemporary circus world.

A former coach of the Canadian gymnastics team, he made his mark in the late 1980s at Cirque du Soleil, where he revolutionized aerial performance by blending acrobatic rigour with remarkable artistic depth. In 1989, he invented the personal elastic lunge — a major innovation that transformed safety and training practices for aerial artists around the world.

André Simard also served as the aerial acrobatics designer for the Bateau act in “O” by Cirque du Soleil. A pioneer of aerial disciplines within the company, he was the first to combine the cradle and parallel bars in a single act, giving rise to a breathtaking suspended scene that remains one of the most iconic moments of the show.

He also played a pivotal role in the development of the National Circus School in Montreal, where he trained multiple generations of artists. In 1995, he founded Les gens d’R, a creative studio that nurtured the emergence of a new acrobatic aesthetic.

Recognized for his outstanding contribution to the circus arts, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada — a distinction that reflects the impact of his work on both the national and international stages.

En Piste honours his memory, boldness, and legacy, and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those he deeply inspired.
