The Invisible Diversity of Quebec Circus

08 Mar 2023

Catherine Lalonde, Le Devoir, March 4, 2023.

The significance of Quebec’s circus sector cannot be fully grasped. It is not readily apparent because, according to En Piste’s outgoing director, Christine Bouchard, 90% to 95% of its artists’ income is derived from exports. Between Ms. Bouchard’s arrival in 2014 at the national circus arts association and her departure last week, several significant events occurred: the sale of Cirque du Soleil to foreign interests, the development of a master plan for circus arts, and a pandemic, among others. This article offers a look at the challenges facing Quebec circus in 2023.
