Since the beginning of the pandemic, the shutdown of almost all professional activities has had dramatic effects on the circus arts sector, despite its strong roots, its capacity for resilience, and the hope of a return to the stage. The results of the second survey on the impacts of COVID-19 on the sector are striking and alarming, and will become even more so if a prospect of resuming professional activities does not emerge in the short term. In fact, it reveals a constant deterioration of the situation for both professionals and organizations, despite the resumption of some activities and access to government measures and aid.
These results unfortunately demonstrate that the measures and aid granted are not sufficient to support the significant challenges faced by artists and companies, for whom maintaining a high level of performance and excellence is essential for a return to the stage.
This national survey, in which 381 respondents participated, was conducted in collaboration with Simon Bastien and took place from November 23 to December 7, 2020. The results are available on our website.
In conclusion, it must be remembered that the Canadian circus arts sector possesses knowledge and expertise that constitute its strength and vitality, and which have contributed to its global renown. It is therefore essential that this sector be quickly supported, helped to recover through a constructive revival, and enabled to regain its creative momentum. As the national association for circus arts, we will continue our efforts in this regard and call upon government partners to maintain vigorous support for a high-performing, innovative, and publicly appreciated sector.
