International Circus Day
The third Saturday inApril
April 17, 2025

On this World Circus Day, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on this art form and its magic that transcends borders and cultures.

Circus is much more than mere entertainment—it is a true metaphor for life itself. It reminds us of the beauty of the unexpected and the importance of daring. Every artist who spins, juggles, and defies gravity embodies not only talent, but also the courage to push the limits of the human experience. They show us that beauty lies in risk and that every fall is an opportunity to rise again and soar higher.

Celebrating this art also means acknowledging the challenges it faces. In recent years, the circus sector has been navigating a time of uncertainty. Ongoing efforts to have its significance recognized within the Quebec and Canadian cultural landscape are the result of continuous collective work. As economic pressures grow, it is essential to keep moving forward and to come together. The resilience and fire that drive circus artists and professionals deserve special recognition today.

On this special day, everyone is invited to reflect on their own experience with circus. It’s a time to share thoughts, emotions, and memories.

And to end on a bright and hopeful note, let us proudly celebrate the fact that Geneviève Dupéré was awarded the Jury Prize at the luncheon for the 39th edition of the Grand Prix of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, held in the presence of 850 guests on April 17. Her acrobatic documentary performance, Éch2osystème: from River to Stage, highlights the crucial role circus artists play in telling the story of climate change in a different way. This award, which comes with a $10,000 grant offered by Desjardins Caisse de la Culture, acknowledges the artistic, poetic, and social commitment of an entire community.

This recognition reminds us how powerfully meaningful and transformative circus can be. Together, we form a living, united, and committed ecosystem, where everyone brings their own light, colour, and voice.

Thank you to the artists and to all those who keep circus alive. You are essential.
